Benefits for AFA Members
AFA has some "extras" of interest to members. These include:
THE DON BELL ALASKA LOGGERS SCHOLARSHIP FUND - The Alaska
Loggers Association Scholarship Fund was established in 1971. In 1996 the name was changed
to the Don Bell Alaska Loggers Scholarship Fund. AFA is currently providing three
scholarships a year to dependents of Regular members.. Applicants are solicited throughout
the state and a committee reviews the applications and selects the most qualified
candidates.
AFA WEB SITE - The Association maintains a site on the World
Wide Web to provide current information on issues affecting the Alaska forest products
industry. The press releases and briefs section are most frequently visited. Members can
choose to link their site with ours. Check it out at www.akforest.org.
AFA ANNUAL CONVENTION - Every year AFA holds its convention in a
different community in Alaska. Speakers are invited and seminars are held to bring
attendees up to date on the latest happenings in the forest products industry. The Board
of Directors holds its annual meeting, elects new officers and seats a new Board at that
time. Associate members have the opportunity to meet Regular members and conduct business.
If space allows, booths can be set up to promote products. At this convention, the
Associate members hold their infamous "Red Suspender Party". Alaska Women in
Timber hold their fund raising auction at the party.
AFA NEWSLETTER - AFA publishes a monthly newsletter, the Alaska
Timber Times. This newsletter keeps growing in size with more articles of interest to the
readers and now includes advertising spaces for AFA members. A subscription is available
to non-members for $15.00 per year.
ALASKA LOGGERS "PEOPLE MAP" - This map is published
every other year and shows the location of Regular members. The last map was published in
1997 and is available free from the AFA office.
