2000 Eligibility Requirements
for the
Don Bell Alaska Loggers Scholarship Award Program
The Alaska Forest Association will award several scholarships in 1999. The object of these scholarships is to assist the recipients in getting a post secondary education. Previous Don Bell Alaska Loggers Scholarship recipients who are still attending college are eligible to apply and may be awarded one of these scholarships. One of the scholarships may go to a graduating senior who is entering a vocational or technical school. Favorable consideration will be given to a qualified applicant from an Alaskan high school of fewer than 160 students (or to a student who is completing a certified correspondence course).
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
1. Applicant must have a parent who is a working employee of an AFA Regular Member company or be employed by an AFA Regular Member company;
2. Previous DBALA recipients now enrolled in any college or accredited Vocational-Technical Program are eligible to apply if criteria number 1 is met. (an individual may receive no more than four total DBALA Scholarships).
BASIS OF SELECTION
The following criteria will be used to select the scholarship recipients (listed in priority):
Essay (see instructions below)
Autobiography (see instructions below)
School grades and rank in class
Test scores (ACT or SAT)
Recommendations (see instructions below)
Extracurricular activities (community service and involvement, work, etc)
Presentation of application
AWARD
The scholarship committee will award a minimum of one scholarship per year in the amount of $1,500. More than one scholarship may be awarded by the committee depending on the number of applicants and the finances available from the DBALA Program. All awards will be based on the strength of the applicant and their application.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
A bound portfolio must be received in the AFA office by April 3, 2000 and must include all the following items - in the order they are listed below:
Essay, 1,000 word limit. Use this essay to demonstrate your knowledge of the forest products industry to the committee. The following questions should be answered through your essay:
- How has the forest products industry infuenced your life? What does the forest products industry mean to you?
- What effect, if any, have national issues, politics and economics had on Alaskas forest products industry?
- How will Alaskas forest products industry influence your future?
- How will your future plans positively impact Alaskas forest products industry?
NOTIFICATION
The winners will be notified by mail, email or telephone and will be required to show proof of registration at their selected college. AFA will try to have an AFA member announce the awards at the awards ceremony or graduation ceremony of each recipients schools.
The recipient of the award is responsible for having the verification sent to AFA. When AFA receives this verification from the college registrar the check will be sent directly to the school.
RESTRICTIONS
The award may be used for:
* Room and Board (while in regular attendance & in good standing in school)
* Tuition
* Textbooks and school supplies
The award must be used during a full continuous academic year, beginning any time during the school year immediately following the award. If a student drops out of school or is unable to continue (except for health reasons), no further payment for any purpose shall be made.
