AFA Associate Member's Scholarship
Award
Eligibility Requirements
2000
The Alaska Forest Association Associate Members will award a scholarship in 2000. In 1999
the Associate Members awarded a $3,500 scholarship. The goal of the Associate Members is
to award a scholarship of $3,500 in 2000 to assist a student in getting a post secondary
education. The amount of the 2000 award is subject to change.
ELIGIBILITY
The candidate must:
have a parent or guardian who is a working employee of an AFA Associate
Member company or be an employee of an
AFA Associate Member company;
be a high school senior or be
enrolled in an accredited Vocational-Technical Program;
or have been out of school for no more than one year prior to the date of scholarship
application.
BASIS OF SELECTION
The following criteria will be used to select the scholarship recipients (listed in
priority):
Essay (see instructions below)
Autobiography (see instructions below)
School grades and rank in class
Test scores (ACT or SAT)
Recommendations (see instructions below)
Extracurricular activities (community service and involvement, work, etc)
Presentation of application
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
A bound portfolio must be received in the AFA office by April 3, 2000 and must include all
the following items - in the order they are listed below:
- How has the forest products industry influenced your life?
SELECTION
The scholarship committee will select an award winner and an alternate. Selections by the
committee will be final.
NOTIFICATION
The winner will be notified by mail, email or telephone and will be required to show proof
of registration at their selected
college. AFA will try to have an AFA Associate Member announce the awards at the awards
ceremony or graduation
ceremony of each recipients' schools.
The recipient of the award is responsible for having the verification sent to AFA. When
AFA receives this verification from the college registrar the check will be sent directly to the
school.
RESTRICTIONS
The award may be used for:
Room and Board (while in regular attendance & in good standing at school)
Tuition
Textbooks and school supplies
The award must be used during a full continuous academic year, beginning any time during
the school year immediately
following the award. If a student drops out of school or is unable to continue (except for
health reasons), no further payment for any purpose shall be made.
